Treatment of Symptomatic Cervical Ectopy by 810 nm Diode Laser
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Cervical ectopy is a condition in which the squamous covering of the vaginal aspect of the cervix is replaced by columnar epithelium which is a continuous with that lining the ecto-cervix. If asymptomatic needs no treatment but when there are symptoms and cause troublesome then a simple treatment; either freezing or cauterizing the cervical erosion will stop the problem.
Objective: To evaluate treatment of women with symptomatic cervical ectopy using 810 nm diode laser.
Methods: Sixty five patients with different complaints and cervical ectopy on examination were treated in private clinic and al yarmuk teaching hospital between September 2009 to July 2010; 30 patients of them were treated by diode laser (study group) and 35 patients treated with electrocautery (control group) and followed up 2, and 4 weeks after treatment by clinical criteria (pain , blood loss, vaginal discharge and needing for 2nd session).
Results: Pain, bleeding and vaginal discharge occurred in (4, 6, 6) patients respectively in laser group compared to (26, 24, 18) patients in electrocautery group which was statistically significant, while insignificant difference among the two groups regarding returning back to work ( immediate for both) and needing a 2nd session (2 in laser group and 5 in electrocautery group).
Conclusion: Laser therapy proves to be useful in treating cervical ectopy. It offers many advantages over the conventional surgical procedures (electrcautery) and has minimal complications.
